Library mission

The Marvin United Methodist Church Library serves our church members in developing their Christian faith. Books and videos are carefully selected to provide a balanced collection that is constructive in influence, morally sound and of high literary quality.  

 Our collection contains more than 5,000 books and movies on a wide variety of topics ranging from prayer to social justice issues to spiritual biographies. Fiction books round out the collection. Both adult and juvenile materials are available. Special features include a “Pastors’ Picks” shelf and Christian magazines.

The library is located on the first floor at the end of the atrium and adjacent to the Adult Lounge. The library is on Sundays, Wednesday evenings and weekdays during business hours.

Large-print books

The library now has large print books. These “easy on the eye” books cover a variety of topics and include The Power of Praying Through the Bible by Stormie OMartian, Led to Believe by Billy Graham and Come Thirsty by Max Lucado. Funds for these additions were provided by the Crusaders Class in loving memory of Fred and Frances Brock. Also useful for readers with limited vision is a new set of CDs of the Bible, a CD player and a giant print NIV Reference Bible donated by the Century Class in honor of its Sunday School teachers. Look for all these items on the east wall of the library next to the magazines.

Circulation

The loan period is three weeks. Please notify the librarian if renewal is desired. Overdue fines are not assessed, but you will receive a friendly reminder about past due items. Patrons are asked to replace lost or damaged media.

To check out an item, simply fill in your name and current date on the borrower’s card found in the back of the book and drop it in the box on the circulation counter. Please return items to the drop box by the library doors. Donations of books and money are accepted.

Christian education resources

Books, study guides and video/DVD materials for small group and individual study are also housed in the library. These Christian education resources are divided into two groups: Biblical studies (Troublesome Bible Passages, New Testament Stories From theBackside, Through the Bible: Genesis, etc.) and topical studies (for instance Sharing Your Faith, What Every Church Member Should Know About Poverty and Spiritual Disciplines). Multiple copies of many are also available.

To aid Sunday school teachers and other small group leaders in selecting study materials, there is also a file of reviews of the studies used by other classes. All small groups using the library materials are encouraged to complete a review to be placed on file. Blank forms can be accessed on the Resources page of this web site (click here).

Tolstoy and Tea book study group

Tolstoy and Tea is a book study club made up of Christians who appreciate and enjoy reading and discussing classic Christian books. It meets at 10 a.m. on the first Friday of each month (excluding summer months) in the Adult Lounge. New members are always welcome. Come and have tea and fellowship as we grow together. Meetings have ended for the spring but will resume this fall.
